WALK 4
KING’S CROSS & ANGEL
ABOUT THE WALK
This walk will take you through two neighborhoods: King’s Cross and Angel. King’s Cross is changing rapidly, with new hotspots popping up left and right. Angel is not an ideal place to start your vacation if you’ve never been to London before—the focus here is mainly on eating, drinking, and shopping.
THE NEIGHBORHOODS
In the northern part of central London you’ll find two increasingly popular neighborhoods: King’s Cross and Angel.
King’s Cross in particular is evolving fast. Not long ago, the neighborhood was plagued by prostitution and crime, but since the 1990s the area has undergone a significant transformation. With the arrival of the Eurostar high-speed railway service in 2007, and major renovations to the King’s Cross/St. Pancras International station and the surrounding dilapidated buildings, King’s Cross is now a completely different place. Not to mention famous with Harry Potter fans, who know that King’s Cross station is where Harry catches the Hogwarts Express from Platform 9 ¾ (there’s a photo op and gift shop here).
Granary Square is a great example of the recent development. This square is surrounded by renovated warehouses that are now home to cool restaurants and the famous fashion school Central Saint Martins. An entirely new neighborhood has gone up around Granary Square. Once all of the construction is complete, King’s Cross will have some 20 new streets, 2,000 new homes, and more than 10,000 extra square feet of store, office, and living space. Google even opened its massive London headquarters here in 2016.
About a 10-minute walk to the east you’ll find Islington, and at its center the charming Angel. This is a bustling neighborhood, known for Upper Street and Essex Road. You won’t find any big museums or tourist attractions here, but you will find a varied selection of stores, pubs, theaters, and restaurants. This neighborhood is very close to the financial center known as “The City” and the creative Clerkenwell neighborhood. It is a popular and diverse residential neighborhood where you’ll find a mix of students, young families, and career-focused couples.
